Why won't my waverunner start unless sprayed by starter fluid?
I have a 2002 Yamaha that won't start in the water if I don't spray it with starter fluid. However, once I spray it it will start up normally. What's ironic though is that when I bring it on land to clean and flush the propeller I don't need to spray it. Only in the water. Any reasons why this happens? Also I heard it was bad for the engine if I spray it every time I use the waverunner. Is that true?
First of all, NEVER use starting fluid. This stuff is known to cause unpredictable and damaging results for most engines (2 and 4 stroke).
It sounds like your PWC is getting starved for fuel during idle and could possibly being starved for fuel under high throttle.
When out of the water, a PWC engine does not have any resistance and can easily start or run since there is no load. Only proper performance in the water (under load) matters, on the hose performance don't mean crap.
Check for proper fuel flow and get the carb(s) rebuilt. It sounds like your idle jet is gummed up and possibly your high speed jets are gummed up some too.
Also, if 2 stroke make sure the oil injection system is working.
