Euro Style Scooter
Euro Style Scooter
What is the best Make/Model of a scooter from 1960-1980 a beginner to restore/fix?
I'm very interested in starting a scooter project and I am mechanically inclined but have only worked on vw's and other euro cars.
I would like it to be the only Vespa style scooters so while researching discovered the older Honda and a few Toyota scooters with the same styling of the larger round side fenders and fuller frame.
SO! my question is what scooter brand would YOU recommend? I'm thinking as a beginner that the Honda's and Toyota's parts with be easier to find than Vespa's and easier to work on?
Any thoughts/advice is very appreciated! Thank you!
Go for a Vespa.
Vespas are still in production and over 16 million units have been sold since 1946, so there is no shortage of spare parts. Japanese copies of a Vespa are by comparison a rarity and parts will be harder to come by.
I have always found European and American motorcycles much easier to work on than Japanese machines which seem to be designed for cheapness of manufacture rather than ease of repair and maintenance by the owner.
Also, there is a huge range of acessories available for Vespas - front and rear carriers, light bars, seats, lights, spare wheel holders .... take a look at what some of these members of the Vespa Club of Britain have done.

There is some good advice on buying a used Vespa at http://www1.epinions.com/content_6646042244 ... great stuff written by a scooter expert who knows a lot more than me on the subject.
